It’s weird how one week there will be six films released one week, then only two the following week. This week, two films which I don’t think you’ll pick up once, let alone twice, were released. Here are my reflix reviews for The Spirit and The Reader.

Okay, here are the final three reflix reviews of the DVD releases this week. Most of them are movies I wouldn’t watch again, but I thought I’d give you my take anyways. Also, I couldn’t find a decent sized poster for Not Easily Broken. Here is the review!

Okay, this week we’ve got a grab-bag of films I’ve checked or re-checked out. I’ve been cramming for some of the upcoming profiles and Top 10s as well, so I’ll leave those films out until next week. Also, don’t forget to check out my reflix review of The Rocker earlier in the week – definitely worth a view over. This Friday’s flicks are Choke, Young@Heart, Bigger Stronger Faster, and Transporter 3.

N.B. Since there were no new releases as straight-to-DVD this week, there will be no Thursday DVD Round up!

This week’s choice for The Ultimate Reflix Collection is The Shawshank Redemption.  I know that this is a fairly easy choice, but it is one of the most reflixable films I think I’ve ever seen. It was a film which shocked me at first because I didn’t expect it to be so good and as I saw it multiple times, on TV or DVD, its only gotten better with age. Its one of the few films which didn’t make much money at the box office, but gained speed on VHS and now DVD and is one of the most beloved films in a long time.  I don’t generally like Tim Robbins in many of his other films, but this one is a particularly great film which is absolutely infinitely reflixable.

This week’s profile is on one of my favourite performers today – Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. He burst onto the scene with a slate of action movies which led some to believe he could be the next Arnold, but he then switched to family flicks which have led him off the rails a bit, but definitely helped his popularity. Sure, he’s not the greatest actor in the world, or at least hasn’t shown it yet, but he absolutely has some fantastic films that are worth reflixing again and again. I loved him when he was in the WWE and I continue to love him on screen. He’s got charisma and a universal appeal that few actors ca match today. Here’s a recap of his filmography.

The Rocker

Synopsis – An aging rock drummer is hired by his nephew to play drums in a high school band, which is catapulted onto the music scene. Hilarity ensues.

Review – 7/10

Reflix – Going into this film I thought – oh no, a film where Dwight tries to rock-out. As much as I love The Office and even though Rainn Wilson was hilarious on his episode of SNL (especially his SNL Digital Short), I was fearing the worst, especially after a 39% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this film. I think the pitch for this film was “That Thing You Do! with Dwight” because that’s what it feels like. The story is almost exactly the same – a new drummer comes in to an established band and ends up leading them on a summer tour. Same plot, except here Read the rest of this entry »

This week’s top 10 list is a focus on the top 10 most reflixable Sci-Fi films.  Many of these films aren’t considered the best films of the genre – you’ll notice that 2001 and Blade Runner, among others, are left off the top 10 list. But remember, this list is about the top 10 flicks you would watch again and again – every single one gets an infinite rating. Could you really watch Deckard chase after the same androids again and again? Or those chimps jump around the obelisk over and over? I don’t think I could. So here are my top 10 picks for the most reflixable Sci-Fi films.

This weekend, I’m going to focus on one flick which has been a major influence on my own love for film – Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. I remember seeing this movie on constant replay on TBS back in the day and I’ve seen it many more times on DVD. I really think its a film that, if you haven’t seen it in a long time, you should pick it up for an evening of laughs.

First off, if you’ve never seen this film, you are missing out on a piece of cultural history. The synopsis is simple – Ferris Bueller is a high school kid who fakes sick to take a day off school. Its that simple. He recruits his girlfriend and best friend and they enjoy all the fun that Chicago has to offer. However, he’s pursued by his vindictive principal and resentful sister who hope to spoil his fun by ratting him out to his parents and delaying his graduation from high school.

Alright, so last night, rather than going out and checking the new movies in the theatres, I decided to purchase Zack and Miri Make a Porno to finish off the rest of my Seth Rogen Profile from Wednesday. I have updated that page now, but I will give a full review of that film in this post. As well, I have decided that there is no way I will be able to review all the movies that come out on a Friday, so I will be eliminating that feature and just focus on the Friday Flashback. That way I can actually get some work done and not spend $50 each weekend on films alone. What can I say, I’m a poor college student…

In the meantime, I will be catching up with this week’s Friday Flashback by doing a full review on the films I’ve seen during the week. This week, we’ve got Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Hot Fuzz, In The Name of The King – A Dungeon Siege Tale, Redbelt, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Foot Fist Way
